Cala Mosca today is again the subject of a hearing before the European Petitions Committee, following a request made earlier this year by the ALE-Los Verdes MEP Iñaki Irazabalbeitia after her visit to the area as she continues offer her protection for the last remaining undeveloped stretch of coastline on the Orihuela Costa.
She is accompanied by Bob Houliston, the President of CLARO, a long time supporter of the cause and the Orihuela mayor, Monserrate Guillen, also a member of Los Verdes party.
The environmentalists will be able to defend the need for continued protection of the coastline where they will highlight the existence and survival of endangered species such as ‘tudorella mauretanica’, a type of snail, as well as a number of other plants known as jarilla or cabeza de gato, for which the local council has also applied for a further support grant through the European Life program.
Although the Cala Mosca development plan continues to be processed, the intention is that the Petitions Committee prepare a report, albeit non-binding, which will provide for greater measures to protect the area.
In 2007 CLARO had the urban development stopped because the Environmental Impact Statement, that was mandatory under the law at that time, had not completed with over 7000 signatures gathered from local residents in support of the campaign
The outcome of today’s petition will not be known for some weeks during which time the developers will continue to await a decision whilst their legal team develop their case for compensation.
