Proving testament to what the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, described as a “living example of tolerance, peace, integration, unity and harmony among citizens of each of the 27 member states of the European Union and the rest of the world”, hundreds of international residents who represent their own countries, gathered in their adopted home town centre, to celebrate the day which marks the birth of modern day Europe, the 2014 European Day celebration.
The proceedings began at 10:30 in the Plaza De La Constitución, with Scottish Pipers providing a musical introduction to the event. The mayor then took over the formal announcements, accompanied by the councillor for foreign residents, Rosario Martínez, the head of the International Residents Office, Jean Paul Molero and former head Graham Knight, who in turn were joined by four representatives of the next generation of European residents, children of Swedish, German, Italian and English origin, who each read a poem in their own native tongue.
Dolón himself made a multilingual welcome to the gathering crowds, speaking in both Spanish and English, thanking everybody for taking part, whilst also highlighting the unique and cosmopolitan city that Torrevieja has become.
The European flag was then raised in the main square, with the musical accompaniment of Beethoven´s Ode to Joy, remaining flying high for the rest of the day.
As the formalities were done, it was time for the more joyous celebrations to take over, with singing and dancing, and even an appearance my Michael Jackson, albeit in tribute form by the Grupo Factor Danza.
Whilst the party continued, a number of none-profit groups had been invited to take advantage of the situation, by offering information and advice on living in Spain, providing details of such important elements such as hospitals and healthcare.
In fact, now firmly fixed as the most important event in terms of recognising Europe across the continent, the 9th of May is now also equally as important to the city of Torrevieja, perhaps because of the uniqueness of the international population, which the day serves to both represent and honour, whilst celebrating being part of the continent of Europe.
