In a ceremony on 15 May, attended by staff, parents and children, the Scandinavian Academy of Orihuela Costa celebrated the granting to the Academy of the environment certification, the “Green Flag”.
The Nordic Council has promoted eco-schools as an instrument for achieving a sustainable environment in the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. The award of the Green Flag recognises the environment achievements of the recipient schools.
To obtain the award, schools must demonstrate during a two year period activities in the field of energy saving, recycling and improvement of the open air environment. The Orihuela Costa Scandinavian Academy has conscientiously followed this programme. Some months ago it inaugurated a rooftop garden constructed from entirely recycled material. Children help remove litter from the local area.
The enthusiasm for which school and children have pursued the objective of obtaining the Green Flag award was very present at the celebration on 15 May. Local C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, Bob Houliston has supported the Academy in obtaining the award and making known to the local Orihuela and Orihuela Costa community their success.
A representative of the Parents Association of Orihuela Costa municipal schools attended the ceremony and will try and arrange meetings and activities between the children of municipal schools and the Scandinavian Academy in order to promote integration on the coast.
