The Unión Progreso y Democracia political group of Torrevieja, the UPyD, has criticised the Partido Popular councillor for social welfare, Tomás Ballester, after it was revealed that the city has lost half od the social welfare grant from the Valencia government on account of incompetent mismanagement.
The UPyD claim that on account of the town hall not meeting certain requirements, the result is that 45,475 euro which should have come from the government to help those in need will no longer be provided.
The group argue that they think that if those responsible for social welfare had done their job properly, they would have known how this would damage the direct subsidies to the numerous cases of social insecurity that are suffering in Torrevieja.
In a statement, the local coordinator for the UPyD, Jose Serna, explained that “it is inconceivable that Torrevieja has had more than 45,000 euro and has not managed to transfer this amount to be distributed among the many neighbours who are having a really bad time”. Questioning how the councillor devotes his time if not dedicated to helping those in need.
Serna added that “we do not want to think that these grants are targeted towards people related to municipal power, some who do not need, as has happened in the past to buy loyalty towards the PP in Torrevieja”.
