The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon met with the mayor of the municipality of Ribeira Brava in the Cape Verde islands, Américo Nascimento, on Tuesday morning, who was in the town with the intention of forming a partnership between the two municipalities.
Snr Nascimento was accompanied by the Honorary Consul of Cape Verde in Valencia, Alfonso Alvarez, a person closely linked to Torrevieja who knows very well the Cape Verde group who are resident in the town, as well as the President of the Cape Verdean Cultural Association of Torrevieja, Alcides Almeida.
The mayor said that the Torrevieja residents from Cape Verde are deeply rooted in the area, being very active and contributing to numerous events that take place in the town throughout the year.
He said that they are a very humble and hardworking group of people who are closely linked to the traditional salt industry in Torrevieja. This has led to the Cape Verde Cultural Association wishing to forge strong links between Torrevieja and Cabo Verde.
Thus the visit of Américo Nascimento is the first step in the setting up of a twinning arrangement between the two cities, Torrevieja and Ribeira Brava.
