José Manuel Dolon and José Hurtado, both councilors for Los Verdes (the Green Party) claimed last week that they have seen documentation showing that Correos suspended the postal contract with Torrevieja last September because of unpaid invoices despite repeated reminders.
According to the pair, the debt amounted to 48,836 euros, corresponding to the first five months of the year. A lack of information prevented them from confirming just how long the service was interrupted, or when it was re-established, they said.
Although Municipal sources admitted that there was a delay in payments they claim that the service was never suspended.
However the contract for the Town Hall postal service has been re awarded in recent months to the State Post Office for a renewable term of four years at a cost of about 88,000 per year. A PP spokesman said that this new contract achieved savings of around 144,000 euros during the contract period, compared to the cost of the service provided previously.
