Spain is the world’s third winemaking country with as many as 17 Spanish wineries among the world’s best 100, according to the list published every year by the World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wines and Spirits (WAWWJ).
On the 2014 list, Spain is the country with the largest number of wineries and ranks third in terms of winery awards, only behind the USA and France.
The WAWWJ list shows why Spanish wines are in vogue, the international presence of Spanish wineries growing all the time. Data exports from 2014 point in the same direction.
Winery Awards
The highest ranking Spanish winery on the list (6th) is González Byass, the recipient of 167 international awards in 2014. It is followed by Codorníu (8th) with 102 awards and Ramón Bilbao (20th) with 90.
Other well-ranked wineries are Hijos de Antonio Barceló (32nd), Emilio Lustau (33rd), Félix Solís Pagos del Rey (34th), Bodegas Murviedro (35th), Grupo Bodegas Olarra (45th), Vicente Gandía Pla (49th), Bodegas Barbadillo (58th) and Bodegas Burgo Viejo (67th).
Finally, there are Freixenet (72nd), Bodegas Iñaki Núñez (79th), Grupo Barón de Ley-El Coto de Rioja (82nd), Bodegas Rodríguez Sanzo (88th), Bodegas Muriel (89th) and Bodegas Avelino Vegas (99th).
Winemaking tradition
On the whole, there are 85 quality winemaking regions in Spain certified with Designations of Origin (DO). The most renowned are Jerez-Xères-Sherry (the oldest in the country, established in 1935), Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Other much appreciated DOs are Cava, Jumilla, Rueda, Rías Baixas, Bierzo, La Mancha.
