The 589 immigrants were in two boats

We see regular reports of British and Italian operations in the Mediterranean as they continue to rescue thousands of North African immigrants who have been trapped on boats run by Libyan smuggling gangs.

While British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon slammed the rest of Europe for not doing enough as Italy and Britain bares the brunt of the rescue workload he might well have had a thought for the crew of the Guardia Civil (Servicio Maritimo) vessel Rio Segura that was busy rescuing 589 immigrants from Italian waters south of the island of Lampedusa

The rescue was carried out by the Guardia Civil in conjunction with a vessel from the British Border Force, both of which are deployed on Operation Triton in Italian territorial waters.

The 589 immigrants were in two boats, one of a timber construction with about 500 people on board and another rubber dinghy with about 100 people crammed inside.

The larger vessel, 30 meters long and 5 meters wide, carried no identification nor was it flying any flag.
Transfer of the immigrants to the Rio Segura was carried out by two Guardia dinghy’s together with a much larger British landing craft manned by personnel from the Royal Marines.

The immigrants were taken to the Italian port of Reggio Calabria where they were processed, receiving medical examinations, food and a change of clothing.
