The Torrevieja government team intends to gradually renew the bus stops in conjunction with the start of the implementation of the new urban transport contract, which is currently awaiting the Contracting Board’s proposal of a successful bidder – Avanza, the company that currently provides the service, has presented the best offer compared to the other two proposals from large companies in the sector that are also competing for the contract.
To that purpose, the governing board approved a project on Friday, February 20th, to improve 181 bus stops, the great majority of which are in bad shape or do not have a shelter. The project, which is expected to cost €1.5 million, will cover the entire municipality, including high- and medium-density urban districts, low-density residential regions, the natural park, and the beaches.
The new concession, which reorganises lines, optimises routes, and enhances frequencies, also necessitates the removal of certain stops that are no longer functioning, the building of new ones, and the complete conversion of the remainder.
This project not only adapts the network to new route design, but it also enhances infrastructure functionality and assures compliance with current accessibility and mobility laws. It entails defining the civil works and new design of bus shelters to be built at each stop for the new public transport service, whose contract is worth €138.5 million, second only to the trash collection contract.
Models
The project distinguishes between five categories. Types 0 and 1, which total nine, will be 35 metres long, allowing two buses to stop simultaneously. They will include sun-protective shelters, passenger information systems (bus information displays), benches, standing supports, and advertising panels. Type 0 will also feature a self-cleaning lavatory.
The 42 Type 2 stations will be 20 metres long and have a four-metre canopy with full facilities. The Type 3 stops, which are the most numerous at 81, will be 15 metres long and have the same furnishings. The 49 Type 4 stops will incorporate bus information poles and, in certain cases, passenger benches. All will ensure an accessible pedestrian route 1.80 metres wide, tactile paving, and proper integration with existing urban networks.

Avanza has specifically provided 166 additional dynamic information screens at the stops in its bid, despite the fact that the tender specifications require only 20.
In addition to the installation of new canopies and totems, the project will entail specialised demolitions for new asphalt, curb cuts at pedestrian crossings, and the dismantling and replacement of street furniture and signs.
Lighting
The governing board approved a tender to renovate public lighting in the streets surrounding the Avenida de Baleares. The goal is to improve energy efficiency and light quality in this area of the municipality. The base budget is 177,394 euros, with a four-month execution period.
Concha Sala, Councillor for Public Lighting, plans to replace the lighting network on various roads, including Menorca, Mallorca, Formentera, Ibiza, Mercator, Isla Hormiga, and Martín Pescador streets. The project will include 63 new poles and 72 new luminaires.
Drug addiction
The bidding procedure for a contract to conduct drug and other addiction prevention programmes in schools and institutes was also approved, with a €133,000 budget for two years and a two-year extension. A total of €66,697 was set aside for the first two years of implementation.
The workshops will specifically target students in grades 5 and 6 of primary school and grades 1 and 2 of secondary school, providing educational materials to both students and educators.
This effort is part of the city prevention and health promotion plan, concentrating on early and universal interventions in schools as a vital place for values teaching and healthy habit acquisition.
Parties
The City Council approved the first extension of the contract with Producciones Artísticas Horizonte Musical for the May Fair celebration. The contract is valid until May 4, 2027 and is worth 182,255 euros.
The governing board has also considered the petitions submitted by several interested parties for authorisation to hold the customary Easter camping event in the José Eduardo Gil Rebollo recreational area from March 18th to April 13th. A total of 39 applications were received for 361 persons in 152 tents.
