A Maritime Rescue vessel saved fifteen male migrants from a tiny boat about five kilometres off the coast of Arenales del Sol, which is in the municipality of Elche (Alicante).
The operation started on Tuesday night, February 24th, when the boat called the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of Valencia about 11 p.m. and asked for help. This led to the deployment of the Salvamar Leo.
The ship helped the people on the boat, who got to the port of Alicante about 1:15 a.m. to get help from the Red Cross.
According to the same sources, a Guardia Civil ship was also sent out, and the people who were rescued, who were reportedly from the Maghreb, were in good health.
The website Ca-Minando Fronteras says that more and more migrants are dying when they choose to enter Spain through the Alicante coast.
This is because migration patterns are changing on the western Euro-African border. More and more people are looking for ways to get into Europe through the Spanish Levant and the Balearic Islands.
This number shows that the victims came from a different place. “The number of people passing through Algeria has gone up a lot, especially Somalis,” says Ca-Minando Fronteras.
