The National Police have arrested two minors in Elche (Alicante) for allegedly stealing five mopeds in just two weeks. The police have found all the stolen mopeds and given them back to their owners. According to a statement from the police, the investigation started when they got a lot of information about a string of moped thefts that happened in a short amount of time.
So, after looking into all the material, officials from the Elche Police Station’s property crimes branch identified a connection between all the reported crimes. All of these incidents occurred in the same area and at night. Based on the evidence, they asked the operational response team for help. The team then set up a surveillance operation in the area where the robberies were said to have happened. On one of their patrols, they saw two young males on a moped. When they saw the police, they started to drive dangerously, even running a red light, so the officers promptly stopped them. The officers checked and found that none of the young men owned the moped. They also checked the owner’s details and found that the two accused had allegedly stolen the vehicle just moments earlier. The police were able to find the moped and the other stolen cars, which were stashed in a wooded region near the Vinalopó River. Five mopeds were found and returned to their original owners, but their ignition cords were damaged, probably to make it easier for the thieves to steal them. The police inquiry ended with the arrest of the two young people, who were both minors. The officers also acknowledged that they didn’t have driver’s licences, which the local police were told about so they could take further action. The police have turned over the two adolescents who were arrested for allegedly committing up to five robberies with mopeds to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
