The Guardia Civil has arrested Rafael Ramón Mompó, the councillor for Legal Services, Contracting, and Heritage in the Altea City Council (Alicante), from Compromís. He is accused of gender violence for allegedly hurting his partner. Sources close to the case said that the arrest happened this Sunday, March 15th, at 9:00 p.m. for incidents that supposedly happened in a home in Xàbia. They also said that there is no record of any previous gender-based violence. Diego Zaragozí, the mayor of Altea and a member of Compromís, has chosen to take away this councillor’s powers “as a precautionary measure while the facts are clarified and official information is known” in this case. In a press release on Monday morning, the government team said that they “only” have “the information that has been reported in the media,” and that there is not yet a full official declaration on what happened or on any possible ongoing police or court actions.
He said, “While fully respecting the principle of presumption of innocence that protects everyone, the government team wants to make it clear that they strongly and unequivocally condemn any kind of violence, especially violence between couples or against women.” In this regard, the local government has made it clear that it is “unequivocally committed to defending equality, the dignity of people, and the end of all forms of violence.” Throughout the morning, official information on the events, especially any possible charges that may come from the police or court action, is expected to be made public. He said, “The mayor and the governing team will make the right decisions once they have all the official information.”He also said, “In the meantime, we stress our utmost caution, respect for the judicial process, and trust in the work of the competent authorities.”
