According to a statement from the city, the Alicante Local Police recovered 750 fake items, mostly football club shirts and brand-name handbags, during a fresh operation against illicit street vending that took place on El Postiguet beach.
This operation involved 16 officers and three commanders from the Fox unit, the Urban Patrol Unit (USR), and the Mobility and Intervention Support Group (Grumai). Last March, the Local Police confiscated another 400 fake items along the city’s waterfront in a similar operation. This is a prophylactic measure against unauthorised sales. “The number of people who have come to Alicante has increased a lot during the past Holy Week, especially at El Postiguet beach and along the entire coastline,” said Julio Calero, the Councillor for Security. “We have stepped up our surveillance against illegal sales.” “This is a routine operation that we also stepped up last summer in busy areas like the Explanada, Paseo de Gómiz, Plaza de la Puerta del Mar, Paseo de los Mártires de la Libertad, and other streets along the waterfront,” the councillor said. He also talked about how the Local Police and the Port Police work together “to act as effectively as possible in this area of the city.”
Calero stressed the “need” to enforce the ordinance on the occupation of public roads “and combat this illegal practice of itinerant street vending, which is often associated with counterfeiting and crimes against industrial property,” while also highlighting that increased surveillance will be maintained “and redoubled” in the coming weeks, as the peak summer season approaches and with it, the number of tourists and visitors increases, according to the same sources.
