The Benidorm City Council is now working on the contract for the new service that will run, maintain, and take care of the city’s decorative fountains. The contract now includes the Neptune Square fountain, which is the principal new feature. This contract will be given out as a single lot, unlike the last one.
The annual budget for this contract is 192,594.16 euros. It includes the fountains at the AP7 roundabout, Avenida Europa, Plaza de la Hispanidad, the intersection of Calle Ibiza and Filipinas, Parque de Elche, Periodista Emilio Romero, Calle Venezuela, Plaza de la Senyoría, Séquia Mare, and Plaza de Neptuno.

José Ramón González de Zárate, the Councillor for the Water Cycle, said that the goal of this tender is twofold: to save money and energy, and to use less water. In this regard, the councillor said that “new electrical and lighting systems with LED bulbs, which use less energy,” have been added.
To protect drinking water, the goal is to preserve the water in the basin for as long as possible so that it doesn’t have to be refilled and only loses water through evaporation. González de Zárate said that the business that won the contract will be in charge of keeping the water in all of the ornamental fountains clean and clear by doing the appropriate treatments and cleaning.
The contractor is also in charge of stopping the growth of algae, microbes, and larvae, as well as stopping the buildup of calcium deposits. To do this, physicochemical factors (such chlorine and pH) will be checked once a week, while microbiological parameters (like aerobic bacteria and Legionella) will be checked once a month.
Every three months, the fountains will also be checked. Every six months, all of the nozzles and booster pumps will be checked. The pre-filter will be checked once a month, and the recirculation filter will be checked once every six months. Lastly, the disinfection tools will be checked once a month.
The Councillor for Water Cycle said, “We will have a very good contract, not more than 200,000 euros, which will help improve the city’s image and make these areas feel fresh.”
