Elche National Police has helped break up a group of criminals who travelled over Spain stealing things and committing bank card fraud. The Udev-Patrimonio Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of the Jaén Police Station directed the operation, which led to the arrest in Madrid of a 31-year-old man who is suspected of being involved in multiple thefts and frauds and being a part of a criminal organisation.
Police from all throughout the country, including Investigation Group I from the Elche Police Station, took part in this operation. Units from Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes, Almería, and the Usera-Villaverde area of Madrid also took part, along with the Elche officers.
Lying
Last June, the investigation started in Jaén after a victim told police that they had been duped in a shopping mall parking lot. One person informed her she had lost her wallet, and while she was distracted, another person stole her purse from the passenger seat. The thieves were able to take out around €1,000 in just a few minutes using the stolen cards.
From that point on, and thanks to the coordinated work of the different police stations, the agents were able to find a very clear criminal pattern, or “modus operandi,” that linked many similar events in different parts of the country, proving that a very specialised group was on the move.
Three men
The crew, which included three Peruvian guys, travelled to several districts and employed diversion techniques to steal bank cards, handbags, and other items. After that, they quickly withdrew cash from ATMs, which gave them a lot of money.
Besides the man who was caught in Madrid, detectives have found two more members of the group who are already in prison.
