In the Sierra de Orihuela, a forest fire is currently affecting a difficult-to-access area at the beginning of the ascent to Cruz de la Muela. The firefighters, who received the alert at 10:17 p.m., continued their efforts to extinguish the blaze early this morning, Tuesday April 14th.
The fire took place in close proximity to the Montepinar housing development, where the 8-kilometer round-trip route to ascend La Muela commences. This path is highly sought after as it provides access to the city’s most emblematic landmark and is the focal point of one of the most eagerly anticipated events in May, which is its illumination.
The firefighters were unable to operate aerial firefighting resources as night fell. Consequently, the fire stations in Orihuela and Almoradí, as well as forest firefighters, were activated to provide ground personnel capable of conducting firefighting operations on the ground.
The fire was stabilised by firefighters at 4:00 a.m. Although a detachment of forest firefighters remains on site, the situation was extremely favourable at 7:00 AM following the intensive work that was conducted throughout the night.
It is anticipated that the fire will be extinguished throughout the morning, provided that the weather permits.
