A cleaning woman in Elche, Alicante, was arrested by National Police officers after allegedly stealing items from the university where she worked. Her partner has also been arrested, according to a statement from Police Headquarters.
The woman worked for a university cleaning firm and reportedly used her position to get access to campus facilities and steal stuff. She and her associate, the detained male, subsequently sold the stolen items at secondhand stores. The police inquiry began after a university employee reported the loss of a university-owned laptop that was kept in one of the offices.
According to the report, detectives launched an investigation to identify, locate, and arrest the accused criminals. Following their inquiry, officers established that no one had entered the department where the alleged computer had disappeared, with the exception of cleaning personnel who had keys to the various facilities. When officers contacted the cleaning company, they stated that various company goods had gone missing since one of their employees began working there.
Through enquiries with secondhand stores, authorities discovered several sales of products in the name of the accused offender, a cleaning company employee. They also discovered other sales made by a man who turned out to be the woman’s partner, assisting her in selling the stolen goods. After verifying all sales, it was determined that a total of 128 items had been sold, the majority of which were electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, and cameras, with a combined value exceeding €3,000. Based on the evidence acquired, these two people were arrested for allegedly participating in a series of thefts. Many of the stolen objects belonged to the cleaning firm and the university, and when recovered, they were returned to their rightful owners. After the police investigation was completed, the case was referred to Elche’s Duty Magistrate’s Court.
