Throughout the school year, pupils will receive two to four hours of instruction in response to catastrophes such as floods, earthquakes, forest fires, and industrial accidents, among other risks. This is the minimum number of sessions that children from preschool to high school will be expected to receive in the aftermath of the disastrous storm that struck Valencia on October 29th, 2024, killing 230 people.
The Valencian Ministry of Education has launched the Civil Protection Emergency Training Plan in non-university educational facilities across the area. This plan was created by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sport in partnership with the autonomous communities. One of the measures recommended by the Valencian Government in a draft distributed to schools at the start of the academic year is the confinement of children to their classrooms under extreme circumstances, such as an unexpected downpour. School principals must also tell the school community about the suspension of lessons.
The training programme, which has already been published in the Generalitat’s Official Gazette, would oblige schools and institutes to incorporate disaster preparedness training measures and actions within their educational initiatives. The lessons will be scheduled within tutoring hours.
In these activities, students will have to learn, as stated in the resolution, about the different civil protection risks; understand their consequences for individuals and the community; become aware of the importance of prevention and self-protection; understand the importance of knowing how to act in emergencies to avoid or minimise their consequences; promote behaviours such as solidarity, responsibility, respect, tolerance, involvement, participation, and the
Each lesson will last at least two hours at the infant and primary levels, and four hours at the higher levels.
The lessons will take place during tutoring hours, from preschool to high school.
Mandatory Implementation
Starting this school year, pupils can receive emergency preparedness training. Following the release of this directive, the Ministry of Education will provide instructors with the appropriate previous preparation in response to civil protection emergencies. Similarly, students can begin receiving training right away.
