The Local Governing Board of the Torrevieja City Council has approved the Provisional award of the concession of the “La Plasa” market to Origen Murcia, S.A. (belonging to the Orenes group) for a period of ten years. Once formalised, the firm will operate both the traditional market and the gourmet food market, which will be located on the ground level and mezzanine of the building , spanning an area of more than 2,000 m².
The project will turn La Plasa into a modern environment, integrating the sale of fresh, local and gourmet products with an innovative gastronomic offer, following patterns previously implemented in cities such as Madrid, Seville or Murcia.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, said: “We want it to stop being a space that closes at noon and to become an active meeting point throughout the day, capable of generating economic activity, attracting visitors and revitalising the urban centre.” The mayor has stressed that the aim is for La Plasa to become a dynamic and open space throughout the day, surpassing the traditional model.
The programme involves private investment of around one million euros and the creation of about 230 jobs, both directly and indirectly, thus reinforcing its role as a major driver of revitalisation in the city centre. The City Council has promised the continuation of the traditional market with favourable conditions to allow the current sellers to stay in their areas.
“This is a company with more than 20 years of experience in this type of project, which meets all the requirements and that has already proven its capabilities in similar spaces,” underlined Dolón the experience of the dealer.
The new market will be divided into several areas that will enable traditional shopping and on-site consumption, which will further integrate local enterprises and freelancers into the management model.
The upper floors: a fresh method and a reassuring message
Regarding the higher levels of the building, the mayor wished to dispel any doubts: “No disruptive activities or anything that could disturb the peace will be implemented. “We want to study rigorously which uses are most beneficial for Torrevieja and start a new process with all the guarantees that are necessary,” he explained.
The City Council will establish a new file to specify the use of the second and third floors – not included in the current concession – analysing the ideas from the point of view of public interest and social return. One of the concepts proposed is a multifunctional hall that can be used for institutional or cultural events or activities related to festivals such as DESAL.
Proposed schedule
Depending on how work, which is on schedule, progresses, the city council expects the new market to be up and running by the end of this year or early next year. “We want to breathe new life into La Plasa, get people in, generate expenditure and energise the whole of the surrounding area. “Great opportunity for the now and for the future of the centre of Torrevieja”, said Eduardo Dolón.
