Benidorm City Council (Alicante) has proclaimed a day of official mourning in remembrance of the two workers who lost their lives in a workplace accident that occurred yesterday morning, Wednesday April 22nd, at a building facade construction site on Calle Ibiza .
A three-minute silence ceremony will be held in front of the town hall at 12:00 noon today, Thursday, as well. The council has extended an invitation to residents to participate. Toni Pérez, the mayor of Benidorm and president of the Alicante Provincial Council, expressed his profound anguish for “this accident with fatal consequences” and extended the “condescensions of the entire city” to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two deceased. In a statement, municipal sources stated that the mayor “went to the accident site accompanied by other members of the local government to offer his support and assistance to those affected, as well as to the medical teams and security and rescue personnel who responded to the emergency,” including the Provincial Fire Consortium, the Local Police, and the National Police, as soon as he learned of the incident.
The city council reported that the accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. yesterday as a result of the scaffolding collapsing at the construction site where the deceased workers were employed. “Initial reports indicate that the scaffolding collapsed from the midpoint of the 18-story structure.” The City Council stated that the collapse of the structure has necessitated a highly complex operation, which includes the securing of the area, the treatment of the victims, and the prevention of any additional harm. The road is littered with substantial debris.
