The Guardia Civil has arrested two males, aged 21 and 31, accused of attempting to rob an 86-year-old woman and reportedly gravely wounding her. The accused individuals are said to have attempted to take the pocketbook of the victim, who suffered a broken arm and other injuries.
The Guardia Civil said the incident occurred on March 25th after it received a report at 9:00 p.m. that a woman had been assaulted in the centre of the town. Officers from Torrevieja arrived immediately with paramedics and found the 86-year-old victim complaining of terrible pain in her arm. She sustained a broken arm and other injuries and needed surgery. She is now being treated and recuperating at a relative’s house.
After the incident, the Guardia Civil examined witnesses at the site who said that the two alleged culprits had attempted to grab the woman’s pocketbook, forcing it to tumble to the ground. Officers identified both males and collected enough evidence to confirm their identities. The Guardia Civil said they were able to find two men nearby who completely matched the descriptions and characteristics provided by the witnesses, owing to the help of members of the public who gave a thorough description of the incident. Having identified these persons, they then went on to check their property and discovered in a bag they were carrying a pair of glasses and a cap which were intended to conceal them and impede their identification as well as other materials that would link them in the crime. They have both been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery with violence, after allegedly seriously injuring the victim. But the two departed without stealing the pocketbook, due to the witnesses who were present in the place, the Guardia Civil reported.
The detainees have been arraigned before the Investigating Section of the Court of First Instance of Torrevieja, which has decreed their remand in custody without bail.
