Elche has been officially recognised as a “City of Science and Innovation,” a distinction granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. This award highlights the municipality’s commitment to developing innovative and sustainable public policies, placing it among the leading Spanish cities for technological advancement.
By receiving this title, Elche joins the Network of Cities of Science and Innovation, commonly known as the Innpulso Network. This forum brings together municipalities across Spain that prioritise research, development and innovation as essential tools for improving the quality of life for their citizens.
Membership of the Innpulso Network will provide Elche City Council with new avenues for funding, training programmes and collaborative projects. It also provides opportunities to participate in strategic initiatives, such as innovative public procurement and the creation of urban laboratories.
The successful application presented by the City Council emphasised a municipal strategy rooted in innovation. Key initiatives include the digitalisation of public services, the promotion of digital transformation projects, urban sustainability and economic development.
Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted Elche’s close cooperation with the academic and scientific communities. The role of the Elche Business Park was also noted as a vital economic engine, where high-tech companies work alongside traditional sectors undergoing modern transformation.
This recognition places Elche among Spanish cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants that are leading urban change through innovation. The municipality joins other cities such as Alicante, Córdoba, Palencia and Torrevieja in being celebrated for their efforts in sustainability and digital growth.
