The Socialist Municipal Group has once again called upon the People’s Party government team to urgently draft and implement a Comprehensive Municipal Plan for Homeless People in Benidorm. In a recent statement, the Socialists highlighted an evident increase in the number of people living on the streets and criticised the management of Toni Pérez for lacking a clear strategy, relying instead on occasional interventions that do not address the root of the problem.
Cristina Escoda, the Socialist spokesperson, noted that the PSOE originally proposed this measure in 2024, warning of a growing social emergency. She stated that two years later, the situation on the streets is more difficult than ever. Escoda argued that a city with the financial power and budget of Benidorm cannot afford to look away while dozens of residents are forced into destitution without a structured municipal support network.
The Socialist proposal focuses on several objectives aimed at both supporting those currently homeless and preventing social exclusion in the future. The aim is to help individuals restore their life projects and eradicate homelessness within the town. While acknowledging the complexity of the issue, Escoda insisted that specific measures must no longer be delayed.
The spokesperson also pointed out the contrast between official political narratives and the social reality of the municipality. She remarked that while Toni Pérez speaks frequently of tourism excellence and sustainability, the true sustainability of a city is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. She warned that ignoring the issue only makes the suffering chronic and affects local harmony.
The PSOE has urged the PP to accept their proposal to provide Benidorm with a modern and humane tool to address the phenomenon. Escoda concluded by stating that the street should never be a home and that a comprehensive plan is a matter of social justice and efficient public management.
