The police were on the brink of abandoning the search for Jesús Tavira after spending several hours digging through the floor of the home in El Bacarot (Alicante) where they suspected he was buried. A discovery verified that they were on the correct path. A medallion that the vanished businessman consistently wore was discovered among the remains. An item of jewellery that the family independently identified and which was instrumental in the investigation of the crime. It was a medal that Tavira consistently donned, according to source close to the family. The officers contacted the jeweller, who not only verified that the item belonged to Tavira but also knew the inscription by rote. He anticipated the message before the police could read it to him: “Jesus Christ, please take care of our son Jesus.” This information verified that the body was situated beneath the concrete block they were excavating. Although Tavira’s death was not initially suspected to be connected to the murder of María del Carmen Martínez, he was regarded as one of the most significant witnesses in the Sala case.
Jesús Tavira had been missing since March 18th. The police were convinced that the disappearance was not voluntary when his car was discovered in the Virgen del Remedio neighbourhood of Alicante, burnt out, three days later. On Tuesday, his body was discovered concealed within a residence in the rural region of El Bacarot. Four individuals have been apprehended for the murder, including the couple who resided in the residence and had engaged in numerous disputes with Tavira regarding financial matters. Investigators have witnesses who observed the other two detained individuals burning the vehicle, and they are also suspected accomplices.
New foundations
The investigation revealed that Tavira was last observed alive at the residence of the suspects in El Bacarot, and there was no indication that the merchant had departed. The officers requested a search warrant from the court that was investigating the disappearance, as there were indications that the body was buried within the property. The body was located at the house on Tuesday by officers from the Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of the Alicante Police Station, who arrived with specialised apparatus. One of the initial indicators they discovered was that the foundation on which the body was placed was recent.
Nevertheless, it was a challenging endeavour. The body was buried in a hole in an ancient well or cistern, wrapped in plastic, and buried at a depth exceeding two metres. The hole was covered and the earth was laid before concrete was poured over it. The court order for the detainees’ imprisonment underscores the necessity of the involvement of multiple individuals in the effort to conceal the body, as evidenced by the substantial quantities of earth and debris that were relocated. It was a highly arduous task that was meticulously planned in advance to guarantee that the body would never be discovered. Consequently, the authorities are not ruling out the possibility of additional arrests of individuals who were implicated in the murder.
The officers discovered the medal while they were excavating the ground, and, according to sources familiar with the case, they had already abandoned their efforts to locate the body. The officers had concluded that the search was futile after hours of fruitless effort when the jewel suddenly appeared. The jewel’s glimmer verified Tavira’s presence beneath the recently constructed foundation and rekindled a search that had nearly been abandoned. In spite of the body’s advanced state of decomposition, which impeded immediate visual identification, the Scientific Police’s proficiency enabled them to verify the victim’s identity through fingerprint comparison within 24 hours, thereby expediting a process that would have otherwise been contingent upon the time required for DNA analysis.
Fifteen stab wounds
The autopsy determined that Tavira was assassinated following the receipt of a total of fifteen stab wounds from at least two distinct weapons. He was scarcely able to react to the unexpected attack. It is believed by investigators that the initial injury may have been to his neck and back, which would have rendered any defence futile. It is believed that the homicide was committed in a mere ten minutes.
Moisés Candela Sabater and Miguel Ángel Garijo, the private prosecution attorneys representing Tavira’s family, maintain that all four arrested should be charged with murder, rather than merely as accessories after the fact, despite the fact that the involvement of the other two individuals, in addition to the arrested couple, will become more apparent during the investigation. The fourth suspect was already in prison for his alleged involvement in a violent robbery that was unrelated to this crime when the operation took place. Consequently, he was not presented to a magistrate in the same manner as the other three detainees. The private prosecution’s attorneys will also request that the court overseeing the case order the suspect’s imprisonment.
