In Alicante, the National Police have arrested a 51-year-old man. He faces charges of impersonating a police officer. A blue flashing light was attached to the man’s car, and another motorist was pulled over on a public road. Officers of the Public Security Unit watching the scene came up, thinking it was a police patrol.
The man then put his foot to the floor and drove away, removing and turning off the police flashing light. Officers promptly gave chase and caught up with the vehicle a few metres ahead. They pulled alongside and saw that the driver was very frightened.
They found the individual and asked him whether he was police. He gave himself away and said he wasn’t. He pretended to be a police officer and pulled over a car for running a red light, “for a laugh.”
The officers then searched the man’s vehicle, where they found two jackets with police badges in the trunk. Once they determined that the individual had allegedly used equipment and gadgets to mimic a law enforcement officer and carry out conduct related to that force, they detained him as the alleged offender of a crime of impersonating a public official.
He has been released but is still at the disposal of the duty magistrates in Alicante. This trick could cost him a lot. The term could range from one to three years in prison and up to six if he is given extra penalties for wrongful detention or document falsification.
