Preparations are underway for the 2026 Operation Crossing the Strait, the major annual transit operation that facilitates the movement of thousands of travellers between Europe and North Africa. In Alicante, authorities and transport companies are already coordinating to ensure the smooth flow of passengers and vehicles through the city’s port.
The operation, also known as Marhaba, is scheduled to run between June 15th and September 15th. It focuses on providing a safe and efficient crossing during the peak summer months. In Alicante, the route typically connects the city with the Algerian ports of Oran and Algiers. National and local authorities, including the Guardia Civil, National Police, and Civil Protection, are working alongside port officials to manage the expected increase in traffic.
Transport provider Armas Trasmediterránea has announced it will offer nearly two million seats across its various routes for the 2026 campaign. The company plans to increase the frequency of crossings and enhance onboard services, including catering adapted to different requirements and multilingual customer support.
Security and logistical measures will be a priority at the port of Alicante to prevent congestion. This includes the deployment of health services, social assistance, and dedicated areas for rest and prayer. Travellers are advised to purchase tickets in advance and arrive at the port with a closed booking to avoid delays. The Ministry of the Interior has also approved a new digital management system for 2026 to help streamline the passage of the more than 3.5 million people and 800,000 vehicles expected to cross the peninsula this summer.
