The ONCE Mother’s Day Extra draw has once again distributed one of the most spectacular prizes of the year in Spain, with a single winning ticket securing 17 million euro. However, the lucky individual holding the winning numbers will not be able to keep the entire jackpot, as a multimillion-euro portion will go directly to the Treasury.
The winning number for this edition was 55.335, series 092. The owner of this ticket must face a significant tax withholding before receiving the final sum. While the announced prize is 17,000,000 euro, Spanish tax regulations dictate that prizes from lotteries and betting exceeding 40,000 euro must be taxed.
The tax is not applied to the total prize, but only to the amount that exceeds the exempt minimum. In this instance, the first 40,000 euro is tax-free. The remaining amount subject to taxation is 16,960,000 euro. Applying a 20 per cent tax withholding results in a payment of 3,392,000 euro to the authorities. Consequently, the winner will receive approximately 13,608,000 euro net. This remains an astronomical figure, though it is notably lower than the initially announced jackpot.
One of the lesser-known aspects of these draws is that prizes have an expiry date. For a physical ticket of the Mother’s Day Extra, the winner has only 30 calendar days to claim the money, starting from the day after the draw. This means the deadline expires on 2nd June 2026. If the ticket is not presented within this period, the prize will be invalidated and cannot be collected later.
The method of collection depends on how the ticket was purchased. If bought online, the payment is processed automatically, and there is no need to visit a physical collection point as the system identifies the winner directly. For those with a physical ticket, the original must be presented within the legal timeframe. Any damage to or loss of the ticket could complicate the collection process.
The Mother’s Day Extra draw is a traditional highlight of the ONCE calendar. In addition to the 17 million euro grand prize, the draw distributes dozens of secondary prizes of 40,000 euro for the five figures, alongside various smaller amounts. Each year, millions participate, drawn by a format that combines an emotional tribute to mothers with the life-changing possibility of a major win.
