The Guardia Civil has placed a 78-year-old man under investigation for alleged animal cruelty after his dog was discovered with a metal training collar embedded in its neck in Torrevieja.
The investigation began on April 13th following a report from staff at a municipal animal shelter in the town. Workers alerted the authorities to the poor condition of a dog that had been found wandering the public streets.
The animal was suffering from serious injuries and required an emergency transfer to a veterinary clinic for urgent treatment. Upon examination, professionals found the dog was wearing a spiked training collar. As they removed the device, they discovered it had caused deep wounds and had become embedded in the skin due to being worn for a prolonged period. The Guardia Civil noted in a statement that these types of devices are prohibited under current animal welfare regulations.

Officers from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Guardia Civil in Guardamar del Segura took charge of the case. Following the veterinary report and subsequent enquiries, they successfully identified and located the owner. The man is now being investigated for an alleged crime of animal cruelty, and the details of the case have been passed to the Court of Instruction in Torrevieja.
The Guardia Civil has taken this opportunity to remind the public of the importance of providing proper care for pets and encourages the reporting of any behaviour that results in suffering or abandonment.
