The Alicante Provincial Court is set to begin the trial of a man accused of murdering a woman by intentionally setting fire to the home they shared in Elche. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a sentence of 25 years in prison for the defendant, who is charged with murder and arson following the fatal incident that occurred in the municipality.
According to the indictment, the events took place when the man allegedly started a fire in the residence with the full knowledge that the victim was inside and unable to escape. The prosecution argues that the defendant acted with the intent to end the woman’s life, using fire as a lethal tool which resulted in her death due to smoke inhalation and burns.
The investigation conducted prior to the trial suggests that the fire was started using accelerants, ensuring that the flames spread rapidly through the property in Elche. Emergency services who attended the scene at the time were unable to save the woman, whose body was discovered once the blaze had been extinguished by firefighters.
In addition to the prison sentence, the prosecution is requesting significant financial compensation for the victim’s relatives, amounting to several thousand euro in civil liability. The trial will feature testimony from forensic experts, police officers who investigated the origin of the fire, and witnesses who were present in the vicinity of the Elche home on the day of the tragedy. This case has caused a deep stir in the local community due to the particularly cruel nature of the alleged crime.
