The rehabilitation project for the Salt Industry Interpretation Centre in Torrevieja has seen its budget increase by 33 per cent. The local government board in Torrevieja recently approved a price revision for the works, which are being carried out at the former railway station building on Avenida de la Estación.
Originally awarded to the company ACSA Obras e Infraestructuras SAU for 412,125 euro plus VAT, the project’s costs have climbed due to necessary modifications and the rising price of materials. The total investment for the renovation now stands at approximately 548,000 euro.
This project is part of Torrevieja’s Tourism Sustainability Plan and is largely funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds. The renovation aims to transform the historic railway stop into a modern museum space. Once completed, the centre will feature a museographic tour detailing the history of salt extraction in the municipality, from its ancient origins to its current industrial status.
The design includes a distinctive entrance with large illuminated lettering and an interior layout featuring immersive displays, including large blocks of salt and audiovisual presentations. Outside, historical artefacts such as a salt transport waggon and an old water tank known as “La Química” will be preserved as part of the exhibits. Despite the increased costs, the local council maintains that the rehabilitation is essential for preserving the industrial heritage of Torrevieja.
