The Alicante City Council is strengthening its partnership with the Red Cross to improve social care for the elderly and bolster the city’s response to emergencies. Begoña León, the Councillor for Welfare in Alicante, recently visited the Red Cross facilities to discuss the expansion of these vital services.
A key part of this collaboration is a new comprehensive service designed to tackle unwanted loneliness among residents aged over 60. The project involves an investment of 235,000 euro and is expected to deliver more than 800 interventions every week across various social centres in the city. The programme focuses on early detection, emotional support, and helping older people improve their digital skills to stay connected with the community.
In addition to elderly care, the agreement covers emergency social responses. This includes providing immediate assistance during extreme weather conditions or other local crises. The Red Cross will continue to manage provisional shelters and provide basic necessities such as food and hygiene kits to those in need.
The visit also highlighted the Red Cross Training Centre, which plays a crucial role in helping vulnerable groups find employment through guidance and job placement programmes. This reinforced partnership ensures that Alicante remains better prepared to support its most vulnerable citizens through both planned social initiatives and rapid emergency action.
