The maximum retail price of a standard butane cylinder will fall by 5.87 per cent from today, Tuesday 19th May, setting the new cost at 15.39 euro. The adjustment was officialised via a resolution published in the State Official Gazette (BOE), marking a notable reduction from the previous pricing period.
According to data supplied by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, this significant drop is primarily driven by two key measures introduced under Royal Decree-Law 7/2026. These include a reduction in VAT to 10 per cent and the temporary suspension of the Hydrocarbon Tax. Both initiatives form a core part of the Comprehensive Response Plan to the Crisis in the Middle East. Notably, these fiscal adjustments operate independently of the standard 5 per cent regulatory cap used to limit bimonthly price fluctuations.
Authorities highlighted that these tax reliefs have successfully offset substantial increases in other market factors. Specifically, international raw material costs have surged by 74.5 per cent, maritime transport and freight fees have risen by 39.8 per cent, and the euro has experienced a 1.2 per cent depreciation against the US dollar.
The pricing of bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cylinders weighing between 8kg and 20kg remains regulated in Spain. Revisions take place every two months on the third Tuesday of the month, calculated by the Directorate-General for Energy Policy and Mines using a specific legal formula. While the formula factors in international costs, shipping rates, and currency exchange, standard adjustments are strictly capped at a maximum 5 per cent increase or decrease, with any excess or deficit carried over into future pricing reviews.
