Torrevieja Council has banned pedestrian access across the La Hoya bridge spanning the N-332 national road.
The local authority implemented the ban on the bridge, which sits between the La Hoya residential sector and the IES Mare Nostrum secondary school, due to serious safety concerns. Currently, the structure lacks adequate pavements and pedestrian infrastructure, forcing residents and local students to cross using an unmaintained dirt path.
The situation has become increasingly hazardous following a significant rise in traffic volumes since August 2025, when the phase one roads of the major La Hoya housing development were opened. This opening led to a heavy flow of vehicles travelling between the CV-905 and Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas.
Plans are in place to duplicate the bridge to include two vehicle lanes in each direction, proper street lighting, and a dedicated pedestrian walkway. Whilst the developer of the La Hoya urbanisation is funding the 2.5 million euro project, Torrevieja Council must coordinate the plans with the Ministry of Transport’s Directorate-General for Roads. This coordination process has not yet commenced, and the upgraded bridge is not expected to be operational until mid-2027. Until then, walking across the current structure is prohibited.
