The Local Police of Alicante have launched a new special campaign this week focusing on Personal Mobility Vehicles (VPM), such as electric scooters, to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and improve road safety. Informational and control checkpoints will be set up across various districts of the city to monitor users who fail to comply with the rules. Fines for infractions can reach up to 200 euro, and vehicles may be impounded if necessary.
The Councillor for Security, Julio Calero, explained that the initiative aims to correct dangerous behaviours on public roads and guarantee coexistence between different modes of transport. This follows previous campaigns, such as one conducted in February, which resulted in 184 complaints. The police will focus on ensuring scooters are not ridden on pavements or pedestrian zones, and that users do not carry passengers, use mobile phones, or wear headphones.
Regulations stipulate that electric scooters can only be used by individuals aged 16 and over, and wearing a helmet is mandatory. Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited, with fines ranging from 500 to 1,000 euro. Additionally, the vehicles must have a braking system, a bell, lights, and reflective elements at the front and rear.
The Local Police have stressed that electric scooters are considered vehicles for all intents and purposes, meaning riders are obliged to follow general traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and respecting pedestrian crossings. The campaign will run until Sunday to reinforce safety across the municipality.
