Orihuela Council has carried out the purchase and installation of 20 new solar-powered LED street lights across various locations in Orihuela Costa. The project has been spearheaded by the Department of Tourism, managed by Gonzalo Montoya, in coordination with the Department of the Coast, led by Manuel Mestre, as part of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD 4).
The initiative involves placing 4.5-metre columns and solar light fixtures along the seafront promenade of Barranco Rubio, the section between Cala Bosque and Cala Capitán, the Cabo Roig-Aguamarina promenade, and the open square outside the Town Hall on the coast. These areas previously lacked sufficient illumination or suffered from lighting defects.
The primary objective of the work is to improve road and pedestrian safety, particularly in spaces that are heavily used by residents, visitors and tourists, whilst introducing an efficient and environmentally friendly solution. The new lights operate via solar panels and utilise LED technology equipped with motion sensors. Because they do not require a connection to the traditional electrical grid, installation is straightforward and energy consumption is reduced.
The base tender budget for the project totalled 48,279 euro, including VAT.
The Department of the Coast highlighted that this intervention represents a specific and visible improvement in highly frequented coastal spaces, reinforcing safety, urban quality and sustainability across the coastal areas of Orihuela Costa.
