The Department of the Environment at Orihuela Town Hall has stepped up preventative treatments against mosquitoes along the Segura river. This action comes in response to a temporary drop in the water level currently being recorded along the urban stretch of the riverbed.
This situation is due to scheduled maintenance work to clean the weir at the Puente Nuevo, which supplies water to the Callosa irrigation canal. The operation is being coordinated by the local irrigation communities and the relevant water management authorities, requiring a temporary reduction in the river’s flow.
The Councillor for the Environment, Noelia Grao, explained that the local authority decided to intensify mosquito control measures as a preventative step whilst these works take place. “We want to anticipate any potential issues and minimise the inconvenience to residents, which is why we have reinforced treatments in the most sensitive areas close to the riverbed,” she noted.
The maintenance work will take place over several days and, once completed, the river flow will return to its usual levels. In the meantime, the Town Hall will continue to monitor and follow the situation closely, a practice they will also maintain when the Segura Hydrographic Confederation carries out silt dredging operations under its jurisdiction.
The Department of the Environment has reminded the public that mosquito control is carried out continuously throughout the year, with efforts intensified during the months of peak insect activity to protect public health and improve the quality of life for citizens.
