The natural pools and rocky bathing areas along the Juan Aparicio Promenade in Torrevieja have officially reopened to the public this morning. The reopening follows new water safety tests confirming that the area fully complies with established bathing standards.
The local authorities have not clarified which specific parameters were breached or what caused the issue when they initially announced the closure on Wednesday morning, 17th June. However, it was confirmed yesterday that the water contained enterococci levels exceeding the permitted legal limits. This type of bacteria is usually associated with a sewage spill, though identifying the exact source is notoriously difficult.
The General Directorate of Environmental Quality and Education of the Valencian Government has now officially informed Torrevieja City Council that the short-term pollution episode, which was originally detected during routine testing, is over. The regional body authorised the immediate reuse of the popular bathing area after verifying that all analysed values are back within the limits required by current regulations.
From the beginning, the local council proactively activated its protocol under the Beach Management System, coordinated by the Departments of Beaches and the Environment. Following the initial notification from the Valencian Government, the Local Police temporarily closed the bathing area, the lifeguard service raised the red flag, and the environmental agency Agamed conducted further sampling of the water, sand, and rocks to monitor the situation.
Analyses carried out just one day later showed a total recovery of the microbiological values, confirming the incident was an isolated and short-lived episode that was handled swiftly by all the administrations and services involved. Torrevieja City Council highlighted the effectiveness of its monitoring systems, which allow for early detection and immediate action to ensure public safety.
With the reopening of this section of the Juan Aparicio Promenade, the local government team stated that residents and visitors can once again enjoy one of the most emblematic areas of the Torrevieja coastline with complete peace of mind, backed by ongoing quality controls. The council also expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by bathers during the preventive closure and apologised for the temporary inconvenience.
