A drunk driver arrested by the Guardia Civil Traffic Unit last Wednesday, 10th June, accused of fleeing after an accident in El Campello where a 20-year-old woman was injured, was released on bail yesterday by the duty court in Alicante.
Judicial sources have indicated that the driver exercised his right to remain silent. The duty judge did not order the suspension of his driving licence, apparently from his country of origin, Morocco, as a precautionary measure. The Public Prosecutor’s Office did not request his imprisonment, and the duty judge ordered his provisional release.
As reported yesterday, the driver was intercepted and subdued by a patrol of the Local Police of El Campello when he was trying to change a punctured tyre on his car several hundred metres from the site of the collision.
The Guardia Civil Traffic Unit took charge of the suspect and proceeded to arrest him at the scene after he registered a blood alcohol level of 1.06, more than four times above the legal limit, which is 0.25 mg/l in exhaled air.
According to the Guardia Civil investigation, the 32-year-old drunk driver overtook a driving instructor’s car, which was following behind a 20-year-old student who was having a motorcycle lesson. The driver then collided with the motorcycle, and the young woman suffered multiple injuries. The driver did not stop after the collision and fled, a claim he denies.
