The Alicante City Council has approved a third modification to its street cleaning and waste collection contract, injecting 5.6 million euro to significantly reinforce services across local neighbourhoods and at weekends. This extra funding allows for the rollout of an upcoming action plan, which includes the addition of 22 new vehicles and between 120 and 130 extra staff members.
This latest adjustment brings the total increase across three contract modifications to nearly 18 million euro. The overall contract with Netial, a temporary union of the companies Prezero España and FCC Medio Ambiente, now reaches a total value of 377.4 million euro spanning the 2023 to 2031 period. Prior modifications included 5 million euro to combat illegal dumping and green waste collection, alongside 7.2 million euro for an ecopark initiative.
According to the local councillor for cleaning and waste management, Rafael Alemañ, the objective of this new investment is to keep neighbourhoods cleaner for longer periods during the day, shorten response times for removing dirt, and explicitly boost weekend services. The plan expands manual sweeping supported by high-pressure water cleaning vehicles, specifically targeting neighbourhoods, high-traffic areas, plazas, children’s play parks, and container collection points.
The boost in personnel also addresses worker demands, accommodating a schedule restructuring to allow a five-day working week with two days of rest.
