Orihuela Council, through the Department of Infrastructure led by Víctor Valverde and via the public company ECOPLAN, will carry out an important urban improvement project in Villamartin. The objective is to reinforce pedestrian safety, improve accessibility and definitively resolve a situation that has been causing inconvenience and risk in one of the busiest areas of Orihuela Costa.
The intervention will focus on removing an old access point to a rainwater collection channel that currently remains protected by provisional fencing and deteriorated metal covers. To solve this problem, a new raised slab will be constructed over the pavement, allowing the existing gap to be closed permanently, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and vehicles and improving the urban image of the surroundings.
The work will also include the structural reinforcement of the beams supporting the pedestrian area, where signs of deterioration have been detected. For this purpose, the existing elements will be repaired and consolidated before executing the new concrete slab, which will be completely integrated into the pavement and finished with urban paving tiles.
The project also includes the restructuring of the existing pedestrian crossing. Due to the new layout of the space, the pedestrian crossing will be relocated and will feature new build-outs on both sides of the road to improve visibility for users, facilitate accessibility through adapted dropped kerbs and contribute to reducing traffic speed at this point. Furthermore, bollards will be installed to prevent improper loading and unloading manoeuvres, and all horizontal and vertical signage will be renewed.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, highlighted that “we continue to respond to demands that affect the day-to-day lives of the residents of Orihuela Costa. This action will improve safety, accessibility and the image of a very busy area, while also resolving a problem that has required a definitive solution for some time.”
For his part, the Councillor for Infrastructure, Víctor Valverde, pointed out that “this initiative is a necessary action from the point of view of safety and the maintenance of our infrastructure. With it, we eliminate a degraded spot, reinforce the existing structure and improve pedestrian mobility conditions in this environment.”
Valverde also wanted to highlight the work being carried out by the public company ECOPLAN in executing improvement actions in Orihuela Costa, “allowing swift and efficient intervention in those public spaces that require immediate attention to improve the quality of life of residents and visitors.”
This action is part of the infrastructure improvement and maintenance plan that Orihuela Council is developing in different parts of the municipality with the aim of increasing safety, accessibility and the quality of public spaces.
