An investigation by the Judicial Police at the Benidorm Police Station has led to the arrest of a 43-year-old woman for allegedly carrying out a rental scam involving a property in La Cala de Villajoyosa. The suspect, a Venezuelan national, already had a criminal record for similar offences and misappropriation in other areas.
The victim, a 54-year-old Uruguayan woman, was searching for a property to rent in the La Cala area when she found an online advertisement that suited her needs. She contacted a woman via WhatsApp who claimed to be a real estate agent.
The alleged intermediary offered the apartment for 850 euro per month and gave the victim the contact details of another woman so she could view the property. After attending the viewing, the victim decided to move forward with the rental.
The management company then offered her the opportunity to rent the apartment for a full year by paying the entire amount in advance. Believing the transaction was legitimate, the victim transferred 11,500 euro, which covered the rent and the conditions agreed by both sides.
The handover of the keys was arranged for 3rd June. However, once the money was received, the supposed agent began making excuses, delaying responses, and avoiding contact. Realising she had been scammed after the constant evasions made it impossible to get the keys, the victim filed a police report.
Investigating officers identified the suspect, who was arrested on 8th June. Following a court appearance, she was released on bail pending trial. No other arrests have been made, and recovering the money depends on the legal proceedings and any cooperation from the suspect.
The National Police have warned that these scams increase during the summer and urge the public to be cautious with attractive offers. Officers advise being wary of prices well below market rates, particularly in high-demand residential and tourist areas like La Cala de Villajoyosa, where rental prices are currently very high.
