The Valencian Community has recorded nine deaths linked to extreme temperatures over the past twenty-five days. Data from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute indicates that all those who passed away were over the age of 65.
Six of the deaths occurred between 30th May and 4th June, with one fatality reported each day. A further two deaths were recorded on Tuesday, 23rd June , and one on Monday, 22nd June. In terms of geographical distribution, five deaths occurred in Valencia, two in Alicante, and two in Castellón. Six of the individuals were men and three were women.
The region experienced a severe heatwave this week, with temperatures reaching or exceeding 40 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, continuing into Wednesday. In the province of Alicante, residents endured uncomfortable nights with temperatures remaining above 30 degrees. The highest temperature was recorded in the Castellón municipality of Zorita, where the thermometer topped 40 degrees.
In response to the extreme weather, the Ministry of Health has issued guidance to help residents cope with the heat. Recommendations include staying hydrated, consuming light meals such as salads, fruit, and vegetables, and avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. The authorities also stressed the importance of protecting the elderly and vulnerable, as well as using sun protection.
