Torrevieja Council has initially approved the ordinance regulating the fares for the new urban public transport service. This marks one of the final administrative procedures before launching the contract that will completely revamp the city bus network. The proposal passed during the plenary session, with votes in favour from the PP and Vox, while the PSOE and Sueña Torrevieja abstained.
The new regulations set out the pricing structure for the future service, which will operate under an administrative concession. According to the government team, it will significantly improve urban mobility by expanding routes, increasing frequencies, offering broader geographical coverage, and introducing a fleet made up mostly of hybrid and electric vehicles. The new model aims to strengthen transport links between the town centre, residential urbanisations, La Mata, hospitals, educational institutions, and the main commercial and tourist areas of the municipality.
In terms of pricing, a standard single ticket will cost 1.35 euro. Multi-journey travel cards will also be introduced, offering 10 journeys for nine euro and 20 journeys for 18 euro, which reduces the individual trip cost to 0.90 euro. Furthermore, a special concessionary fare of 0.65 euro per journey will be available for individuals under the age of 26, large families, and the long-term unemployed.
The ordinance also includes a “Bono 30” card providing unlimited travel for a month at a cost of 38 euro, alongside a tourist card aimed at visitors, priced at eight euro for three days and 16 euro for seven days. The primary social measure introduced is the “Bono Oro” (Gold Card). This will allow senior citizens over 65, pensioners, and individuals with a registered disability of 33% or more to travel completely free of charge with no annual limits. To qualify, recipients must have been registered residents on the Torrevieja town census for at least one year and meet specific established criteria.
The local council considers that this new fare system adapts well to both the resident population and the high volume of tourists visiting the municipality, while also encouraging the use of public transport through discounts for various social groups.
Following this initial approval, the ordinance will undergo a public consultation period before returning to the plenary session for final approval. Once this administrative process is finished, the new fares will come into effect alongside the launch of the updated urban transport service.
