Torrevieja will introduce a face-to-face Psychology Degree from the UNED during the upcoming academic year, with a maximum forecast of 150 places and registration open from 1st July until 21st October. The new qualification will be taught at the future university headquarters on Calle Concepción, which is scheduled to open at the beginning of September.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, presented the new university provision alongside the Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero; the Director of the UNED, Francisco Escudero; the coordinator of the UNED Classroom in Torrevieja, Jesucristo Riquelme; and the new coordinator, Ana Pérez Caselles. The City Council highlighted that this expansion strengthens the role of the city as a university hub in the Vega Baja.
New university headquarters in Torrevieja
The new university space will host courses from various academic institutions. The headquarters will share activities with future educational programmes from the University of Alicante, the Miguel Hernández University and the UNED, with the objective of concentrating new training opportunities in Torrevieja.
The implementation of the Psychology Degree represents one of the main new developments for the 2026-2027 academic year. Access will not require a minimum entry grade and registration is open to students who have passed the PAU or EVAU exams, those who hold a Higher Degree in Vocational Training, or those who are already studying another degree.
Registration can be completed via the UNED Elche website. Furthermore, the City Council emphasised that the new degree will reduce travel and facilitate access to higher education for young people from Torrevieja and other municipalities in the region.
Work experience at the Torrevieja University Hospital
The UNED and the Torrevieja University Hospital plan to sign a collaboration agreement so that psychology students can undertake their educational work placements there. This measure will allow academic training to be linked with a real healthcare environment.
According to details shared during the presentation, the degree responds to a growing demand for professionals in fields such as mental health, education, business, social services, community intervention and research.
The City Council considers that this university provision reinforces the relationship between higher education, employability and social needs. The new headquarters has also been created with the aim of attracting students, teaching staff and researchers to the city.
Early childhood education exceeds 200 students
The presentation also served to review the progress of the Early Childhood Education Degree, which was introduced in 2022 as a hybrid blended learning course. The qualification already has more than 200 registered students and has become one of the main milestones for the local university project.
This academic year has also marked a watershed moment for Torrevieja. For the first time, students have started and fully completed a university degree entirely within the municipality, after finishing their studies in Early Childhood Education.
The City Council maintains that this result validates the commitment to consolidating a stable offering of university degrees in the city. The municipal forecast is to continue expanding the available qualifications over the coming academic years.
New qualifications from the UNED and the UMH
The UNED is also working on the implementation of a 21st Century Audiovisual Communication Degree for 2027, which will be taught as a blended learning course. This qualification will be oriented towards profiles linked to digital communication, audiovisual media, multimedia production and content creation.
For its part, the Miguel Hernández University will incorporate a Degree in Business Management and Tourism Activities in 2027. This provision aligns with the weight of the tourism sector in Torrevieja and aims to train specialised professionals in a strategic activity for the local economy.
With these new qualifications, Torrevieja moves forward in consolidating its university project. The city will add Psychology, Audiovisual Communication and Business Management and Tourism Activities to an educational offering that already features the Early Childhood Education Degree.
