The Guardia Civil has launched an investigation into a company located in the El Comtat region of Alicante for alleged irregularities in the marketing of honey labelled as organic. The operation has resulted in the precautionary seizure of 11,529 kilos of product after authorities detected significant deficiencies relating to its traceability.
The investigation began last May, when officers became aware of potential non-compliance by a company that was allegedly packaging and marketing conventional honey as if it were organic.
Following several enquiries, the Guardia Civil carried out an inspection at an industrial warehouse located in a municipality within the El Comtat region. The operation involved officers from the Nature Protection Team (EPRONA) of Alicante, working alongside personnel from the Control and Quality Service and the Committee of Ecological Agriculture of the Generalitat Valenciana.
During the inspection, officers verified various irregularities concerning the product’s traceability. On these grounds, they agreed to the precautionary seizure of approximately 11,529 kilos of honey.
In addition, investigators took two product samples. These samples have been forwarded to an accredited agri-food laboratory to determine whether the honey complies with current regulations regarding organic agriculture.
The investigation remains open, and the Guardia Civil is preparing the official police proceedings for the case while awaiting the results of the laboratory analysis.
