Faced with the growing problem of dog urine on the streets, an increasing number of residents have found themselves forced to put up signs on their building facades, businesses and public street furniture. In Elche, complaints have flooded social media networks, prompting the local council to appeal to civic responsibility by launching a new public awareness campaign.
Through an informative video, the campaign gently encourages owners to ensure their pets urinate on the roadway rather than on the pavements. This simple habit change would also significantly reduce water consumption, as the local authority currently allocates more than 30 million litres of water every year to flushing the streets to eliminate urine and foul odours.
These rules are already established within the municipal ordinance, and failing to comply can lead to fines of up to 750 euro. The local council has not ruled out the possibility of intensifying surveillance and monitoring efforts from now on to guarantee compliance.
In the coming days, informative stickers will be placed across local parks and squares to remind owners that their pets must always urinate on the road.
