The National Police have arrested a woman who allegedly tried to remove her baby from the Francesc de Borja Hospital in Gandia, where the newborn was under the urgent guardianship of the Generalitat. The regional government had assumed custody after the child tested positive for cocaine a few days after birth, triggering an investigation into the family situation by child protection services.
The incident took place around 7:30 am yesterday, Thursday 9th July, when hospital security guards detected an irregular situation and detained the mother inside the health facility. According to medical sources, moments before she was intercepted, the woman allegedly handed the baby over to her partner. The father then reportedly left the hospital carrying the newborn hidden inside a sports bag before police patrols arrived.
National Police officers quickly attended the hospital to take charge of the situation. While the mother was arrested at the scene, security forces have launched an investigation to locate the father and ensure the protection of the child. The authorities believe the events could constitute a suspected crime of child abduction due to the regional government’s provisional guardianship. The investigation remains open to fully clarify the events and determine criminal liability, in a case that has caused great shock in Gandia.
