Diana, the most famous turtle on the Valencian coast, has returned to the shores of Denia during the early hours of Saturday morning, 11th July, to lay her eggs. This marks her second nesting session of the summer and represents the second nesting event recorded in the entire Valencian Community this year, with Diana being responsible for both of them.
The loggerhead turtle chose Marineta Cassiana beach for her latest nesting, where she laid 76 eggs. These eggs have since been carefully relocated to Les Albaranes beach, which is the current location of her first nest.
Members of a coordinated volunteering programme involving Denia Town Council, the Eucrante association and Marina El Portet discovered the nest during the early hours. The volunteers were even able to witness Diana returning to the sea after completing her nesting.
The 76 eggs laid in the sand at Marineta Cassiana this morning follow the 106 eggs from her first nesting session of the year, which occurred last month. This nesting season in 2026 marks the third consecutive year that Diana has chosen to leave her eggs in Denia.
Volunteers were fully prepared for her arrival. They knew Diana could emerge from the sea at any moment to lay her eggs, as they were aware she had been swimming near the Denia coast for several days due to her being geolocated.
