A Ryanair flight travelling from Manchester to Alicante was forced to divert to Paris-Beauvais airport yesterday, Tuesday, 14th July, after the flight crew declared an emergency mid-flight.
Flight FR4007 transmitted the 7700 transponder code while flying over northern France. The crew initiated a descent and altered the aircraft’s course toward the Paris airport. The plane landed safely and was met by ground services.
A sudden change of course
The aircraft departed Manchester at approximately 6:41 a.m. UK time, destined for Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. According to flight records from Flightradar24, the flight was expected to arrive at 10:00 a.m. before it was diverted to Beauvais. The Boeing 737 MAX 8-200, registered as EI-ILJ, is part of the current Ryanair fleet.
Air traffic control monitors, such as AeroSignals, reported that the aircraft maintained the emergency code as it descended below 10,000 feet. Controllers prioritised the flight, guiding it into Paris-Beauvais for a secure landing.
Understanding code 7700
Code 7700 is the standard signal used by pilots to alert air traffic control of a general emergency. Activating this code enables controllers to recognise the urgency of the situation immediately, granting the aircraft priority to change course, descend, or land.
Crucially, the code does not specify the nature of the emergency. It may be utilised for technical issues, smoke, pressurisation problems, a medical incident, or any other scenario where the crew requires urgent priority handling.
Cause remains unconfirmed
Ryanair has not yet issued an official statement regarding the specific cause of the emergency, and there have been no reports of injuries or complications during the landing. Based on current information, it is not possible to confirm if the diversion was prompted by a technical fault or a passenger medical issue.
The aircraft’s flight history indicates a planned departure from Paris-Beauvais to continue the journey to Alicante once the issue was resolved. The diversion has disrupted the aircraft’s subsequent schedule, which included the return flight FR4006 from Alicante to Manchester.
