The Alicante City Council has ordered the closure of Tambora, the open-air nightclub in La Albufereta, after confirming that it lacks the necessary building permit to operate. The council has decreed the immediate cessation of activity, as it did in September 2025, warning the responsible company that, in case of non-compliance, local police officers will be sent to seal off the premises.
As reported, the Department of Urban Planning has recently detected new irregularities at one of the city’s trendiest venues: the Tambora nightclub. The establishment, which hosts outdoor events on Avenida de las Torres de la Huerta, was already shut down last year for the same reason. At the time, the decision drew criticism from the opposition, as the closure order was issued in September, even though municipal services had been aware of the situation since July, allowing the business to operate freely throughout the summer of 2025.
Now, the situation is repeating itself: the City Council has ordered Tambora Open Air SL, the company behind the facility, to immediately suspend its outdoor event activities due to the lack of the necessary urban planning and environmental permits. Similarly, the municipal decree ordering the closure warns the company that, should it fail to comply, the facilities will be sealed off by local police officers.
Although Tambora submitted a declaration of responsibility for carrying out occasional activities and the temporary installation of an outdoor event, the technicians in the area directed by Antonio Peral emphasise that there is a report from the Security Service stating that the Security Plan registered by the company does not comply with the provisions of Decree 143/2015 of the Consell, since it does not meet the minimum required content.
Furthermore, regarding this case, officials consider the use requested by Tambora for the plot in question unsuitable, noting that the activity carried out by the open-air nightclub does not fall within the scope of the provisions for granting provisional use licences. Similarly, it is also emphasised that the pergolas included in the project registered by the company lack authorisation or a minor works permit, as established in the corresponding municipal ordinance.
The Urban Planning technicians are also not convinced by the Pedestrian and Road Mobility Plan submitted by the company in March 2026. In this regard, it is stated that the activity requested as a responsible declaration corresponds to public shows or recreational activities that do not remain in the same location for more than four consecutive months. However, the Tambora case does not fit this permit, which is typical for food trucks, fairground stalls and similar temporary activities, since the maximum number of months has clearly been exceeded by not having removed the installation since its initial setup in July 2025.
The City Council decree also notes that there is an open urban planning violation case against the open-air events venue, stemming from the construction of the new parking lot. The council department states that earthmoving for paving the area was carried out without the corresponding municipal authorisation, with the aim of creating a parking lot adjacent to Tambora.
The Pedestrian and Road Mobility Plan submitted by the company in March 2026 also failed to convince the Urban Planning technicians. A technical report from the Traffic department, dated July of this year, reports unfavourably on the proposals made by Tambora in this regard, reiterating the content of another previous report from the council, which already in 2025 warned of the risk of being run over in the area.
Therefore, the City Council concludes that given the technical reports, the suspension of the activity is warranted, in accordance with half a dozen articles of Law 14/2010 on Public Performances. Now, as happened last year, the Council will notify the responsible company of the decision under threat of closure and will grant the company a period for submitting arguments, after requiring the immediate closure of the facilities.
